The Dunes Golf & Tennis Club is a par 70 Mark McCumber design situated on the Southeastern tip of Sanibel Island. Set amidst a wildlife sanctuary sanctioned by the Audubon Cooperative Society, The Dunes is the island’s premier golf destination. This resort course features four sets of tees that play to 5578 yards/123 slope, 5249 yards/111 slope, 4854 yards/106 slope and 4002 yards with a 111 slope for women. Not a long course, the Dunes is noted for its exceptional conditioning and playability – making it a favorite for visitors to the area.
GPS units on each golf cart provides accurate information from tee to green. The five par threes here are quite memorable. Every hole on the layout features water in play, as the meticulously manicured fairways are often flanked by lakes or ponds. This is not a course where one can grip it and rip it off the tee. Frequently, it is necessary to lay up to precise landing zones to set up for approaches over water. Accuracy is also important greenside, though many green complexes present open fronts. There are only 19 sand bunkers on the course – but some are quite large and all are strategically located.
